An exploration of art, neurological disease, creativity and the neural basis of visual perception. Featuring the works of artists affected by neurological conditions, and contemporary art inspired by discoveries in neuroscience.

About Us

The AXNS Collective is a group of recent graduates from the Arts and Sciences, with an interest in interdisciplinary discussion and public education. Founded in 2011 by Cosima Gretton and Martha Crawford, The AXNS Collective aims to facilitate the organisation of inspiring educational events, which focus on the growing field of neuroaesthetics, and drive public discussion and access to academic learning.

 

Cosima Gretton

Curator

Having graduated from the University of Oxford with a degree in Experimental Psychology, Cosima is now three years into the four year Graduate Medicine Course at Kings College London. She has previously worked as part of a team of researchers at Cukurova University in Turkey, investigating the effects of music on alleviating the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. She recently presented a paper entitled ‘Art & The Brain: A View From Dementia’ at the 1st European Visual Science of Art Conference in Alghero, Sardinia.

Martha Crawford

Producer and Head of Community Engagement

Martha graduated from the University of Exeter in 2011 with a B.A. in Drama. During her time at Exeter Martha sat on the Theatre with Teeth committee as Production Supervisor, produced and stage managed various university-based performances, assisted with the curation of Experimentica, a collection of performance art pieces, and performed in Photo 51, a devised performance exploring the life of Rosalind Franklin which was performed at both the Exeter and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. Following a recent move to London, Martha has worked for Artangel as an invigilator and performer as well as volunteering for You Me Bum Bum Train’s 2011-2012 performance. Martha currently works as Enterprise Support Administrator & P.A. to the Director, University Enterprise, at London South Bank University.

Rachel Stratton

Curator

Rachel Stratton is a freelance curator and curatorial assistant at Ben Uri Museum in London. She completed her masters in European Modernism at the Courtauld Institute of Art in June 2011. Her freelance experience includes an exhibition of internationally renowned contemporary photographers at Connaught Brown Gallery in London; a site specific exhibition at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club with curatorial collective 20//20 and collaboration in artist run projects in Tooting Market, Boxpark Shoreditch and Nottingham Contemporary, also with 20//20. Her research interests span twentieth-century and contemporary art and range from art science crossovers, to émigré art and modernism in Britain.

Tess Gammell

Artistic Advisor

Tess graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class degree in Anthropology. Specialising in the evolution of human cognition, Tess spent time in Borneo studying orangutan behaviour to analyse the development of a sense of self. Tess is now a fine artist.

Douglas Baker

Designer

A Graphic Communications graduate from Kingston University, currently working freelance in London. Areas of pursued study include the philosophy of communication and the role of design in a socio-political context.
